REWIRING IMMERSION

How We Built The Play Lab

REWIRING IMMERSION

The Concept

Five years ago, I walked into the immersive room at PossAbilities CIC. On paper, it was a high-tech marvel. In reality, it was a friction-filled nightmare. It was managed by an external firm, it broke constantly, and it required a degree in computer science just to turn the lights on. Wireless keyboards, iPads, and a web of external components made it nearly impossible to navigate—a massive barrier for a space designed specifically for adults with learning disabilities. I decided to stop patching a broken system and start building a new one. My goal: The One-Press Philosophy.

TECH SPEC

  • Multi-wall projection mapping
  • Motion-touch gesture sensors
  • Custom game logic & automation
  • Stream Deck command interface
  • Remote diagnostic access

The One-Press Philosophy

Technology should never be a hurdle; it should be a gateway.

One Press Boot

  • A single button trigger boots the entire architecture, syncs background processes, and loads a welcoming holding screen across every wall.

Stream Deck Logic

A custom Stream Deck controller outside the entrance. One tap displays the room rules; another loads the main menu. Total control, zero friction. The Remote Guardian Staff hit one button on the iPad. This triggers an instant notification via Microsoft Teams. Using secure CCTV and remote-desktop access, fixes happen in real-time. The Architecture of Control To make the room truly accessible, I moved the brains of the operation outside the room. Stream Deck Command I fitted a custom Stream Deck controller outside the entrance. One tap displays the room rules; another loads the main menu. Touch-Wall Interface I categorised every game and challenge so that users can control their entire experience simply by touching the walls. The room is the controller. iPad Command Center Inside, a wall-mounted iPad serves as the "Cockpit." Staff can control volume or trigger a "Soft Reset" if sensors drift—solving 90% of technical hiccups. Close-up of the custom Stream Deck controller with glowing blue buttons The Remote Guardian One of the biggest breakthroughs was the "Tech Help" integration. If something goes wrong, staff hit one button on the iPad. This triggers an instant notification to me via Microsoft Teams. Using a combination of secure CCTV and remote-desktop access, I can see inside the room and fix the code in real-time from anywhere. It turned "system downtime" into "instant recovery." Remote diagnostic dashboard showing system status, CCTV feeds, and network monitoring A Brand with a Soul We didn't just fix the room; we gave it an identity. We rebranded the space to The Play Lab, built a custom booking website, and developed an internal admin system to manage the flow of users. I even fitted an external monitor that changes branding dynamically to show if the room is "Occupied" or "Ready for Booking," making the entire experience feel like a professional, high-end facility. The Play Lab in Action Kids interacting with Under the Sea immersive projection Children playing the space asteroid interactive game Kids playing on the projected football pitch floor game THE RESULT "We don't just design content. We design memories." The Play Lab is now a self-sustaining, neuro-inclusive ecosystem. It's proof that when you bridge the gap between complex tech and human-centric design, you don't just fix a room—you open up a world.
